Marketing agent vs marketing automation
Marketing automation executes a workflow a human designed in advance: if a lead opens this email, send that one. Every branch was decided before the first run. This is the workflow versus agent distinction applied to marketing. A marketing agent is given a goal and decides its own steps at runtime: it reads the current state, picks an action, checks the result, and picks again.
The practical test: when something unexpected happens, automation breaks or falls through to a default branch, while an agent can notice and adapt. The tradeoff is predictability. Automation does exactly what you designed; an agent needs verification and human gates precisely because it decides for itself.
